The fishing itself is as diverse as it is exciting. You can find yourself sight fishing tailing Red’s one moment, pulling Gator Trout out of the grass in another moment, and then hooking up with a Snook out of the mangroves the next. Add to this the exciting Tarpon season that rolls through this area, Tampa Tarpon Fishing Charters, and you will simply not find a more exciting fishery.

The pier at Ballast Point Park stretches more than 900 feet into the bay and serves one of the best spots on the bay for saltwater catfish, along with snook, sheepshead and redfish. Tampa is also home to the longest fishing pier in the world at Skyway Fishing Pier State Park. The park utilizes portions of the old Sunshine Skyway bridge, which was turned into a fishing pier in 1994 after being replaced by a more modern bridge. Restrooms, concessions and a bait shop are located right on the pier, where you can catch snook, sea bass, tarpon, grouper and just about every other species that lives in the bay.

Exceptional numbers of some fairly large flounder were caught, mostly on jigs and lures that could be worked on the bottom. Catching flounder is not difficult, providing you are fishing where the fish are. Passes and artificial reefs are some of the most productive areas to find flounder. The edges of the ICW that run out of Cannon’s Marina and head to Longboat Pass can hold good numbers of “flatties.” Artificial lures, like jigs, work best. Maintain contact with the bottom with your jig as much as possible. Twitch the jig with your rod tip down, forcing the jig to move minimally across the bottom, kicking up small puffs of mud as the lure moves. This action attracts attention from flounder that may be following your jig.

“I’ll rig all tackle, baits and/or lures the day or evening prior to a trip, so when I set forth, my job is to hunt for the signs that will lead us to fish. Refuse to get distracted by rigging tackle or baits on the way to the grounds. When you hit the water, you should be 100 percent focused on signs that will lead you to fish.”
