also works.  Fort DeSoto is a really cool spot to check out in general, but if you’re looking to cast a line, then you will definitely want to try your luck here. Fort Desoto is operated by Pinellas County and consists of five islands: Mullet Key (main island), Madelaine Key, St. Jean Key, St. Christopher Key, and Bonne Fortune Key. In terms of fishing, the two main piers are the Gulf Pier (more than 1,000 feet) and the Bay Pier (about 500 feet). Located at the mouth of Tampa Bay just west of the I-275, this fishing spot is close to Tampa Bay’s core and is reachable by car, but you may have to fight some traffic on your way down, so plan on it taking a little longer than you may think.

Capt. Woody Gore If the water is high enough so that there is several feet of water right in against the mangroves, redfish will move right up into “the bushes”. Redfish can  actually be “lost to the mangroves” on extremely high tides as they move so deep into the mangroves that they aren’t reachable.   In cases like this, fishing can be excellent an hour or two after the high tide as fish come pouring back out.  As a general rule however, fishing mangrove shorelines is best on the highest phases of the tide. Mangroves provide a good food supply, protection from dolphin and sharks, and in the summer, cover from the hot sun.  Many Tampa fishing charters up into the mangroves result in a variety of wildlife sightings which might include numerous sea birds, sharks, porpoises, and even manatees. The best fishing locations are deeper mangrove points that get good current flow.  Most points on a mangrove shoreline will have oyster bars on them as well, providing an additional food source.  If there are pockets or caves along these points, look to cast back up into these as there are days when the fish won’t want to come out of the mangroves to eat a bait.  Most Tampa Area fishing guides will cast for customers in this situation unless the customer has exceptionally good casting ability.  By putting a bait right into a mangrove cave, chances for hooking up are improved.  Any deep areas along a mangrove shorelines, such as a creek mouth, represents another good area to try.  In this shallow water environment, a foot of depth is significant so look for subtle drop offs and holes and expect to find fish there.  Whether fishing potholes in the flats or along the mangroves, fish are usually found in groups of several to twenty fish, although there will be days when schools of several hundred fish are present and fish are hooked literally on every cast…the ideal Tampa fishing charter.  As with longer shoreline oyster bars, if the angler is interested in prospecting a stretch of mangroves and the wind or tide are running parallel to shore, a bobbered pinfish or whitebait cast right up against the mangroves and allowed to drift along the shoreline can be very effective.  Line should be mended in such a way as to keep the bait within a foot or two of the mangroves.  If “plugging” the caves and holes in the mangroves, it’s best to use a good sized split shot, both to improve casting accuracy and to hold the bait in place so that it doesn’t drift into the mangrove roots down current.

F 1 review 16.8 miles away from Summer Vacation Charters TwitterFacebook Snook clearly represent the class of the inshore game fish. Their speed, strong runs and occasional jumps make them the fish of choice for many Florida anglers. Snook are available year round; however the cooler, winter water temperatures slow their metabolisms significantly and make them a difficult target during our coldest months. A wide range of artificial and natural baits can be used to catch snook. The most commonly used method is live baiting with scaled sardines or “whitebait”. However, be sure to review all current fishing regulations before keeping any Snook as this species is heavily protected. Spring and fall fishing typically takes place along inshore structure…river mouths, mangrove shorelines and residential docks. Come late spring, fish move out to the beaches, gather in larger groups and can be caught in greater numbers. During the hottest months of summer, fish tends to feed best during low light periods and at night.
Main 1 Review Remarks: spawns OFFSHORE between March and September; feeds on mollusks and crustaceans, especially sand fleas; local movements are influenced by the tide, and seasonal movements are influenced by temperature.
I’m not alone on this warm winter afternoon. A half-dozen kayak fishermen have come to this Pinellas County preserve for the same reason as me – to catch one of Florida’s most popular sportfish.

this is the one I went on- we caught a lot of fish and threw up over the rail a couple of times (choppy water) but all in all it was a fun time. They clean the fish for you and give you the filets which is awesome. I assume this is common but I don’t actually know. Try to pick a day where the forecast isn’t really windy or stormy 😉 trust me on this…
Things to Do Tuesday, August 11, 1998 Spotted sea trout feed mainly on crabs, menhaden, shrimp, mullet and anchovies. Good fishing for spotted sea trout can be found near the mouth of Tampa Bay around Fort DeSoto during the summer months. The best fishing is at dawn or dusk.
As a 30 year fly fisher of Tampa Bay and the surrounding waters, and the owner of the area’s only dedicated Fly Shop, Tampa Bay on the Fly, I recommend any member of the Tampa Fly Guides for a truly unforgettable experience. I have personally fished with and alongside of each of these guides and I would recommend them for all levels of fly fishermen.
Restaurants Captain Brent Gaskill At the last meeting of our Bar Association, there were Six Memorials in behalf of our fallen brethren. At our next meeting, one year hence, only the Infinite Mind of God can tell how many, and who shall be summoned to cross the river of the Great Beyond.  On April 3d. 1919, Hon. H. L. Gibbs, a Member of the Pamlico County Bar, died with pneumonia in St. Luke’s Hospital, New Bern, North Carolina, where he had gone for treatment only a few days prior thereto. Mr. Gibbs was born in Hyde County, August 12th, 1861, where he lived to the age of maturity. On June 24th, 1890 he married Miss Olivia Farrow who was also of Hyde County. By said marriage there are five children: Mrs. H. M. Jacobs, New Bern, North Carolina, Mr. Sylvester Gibbs, Beaufort, North Carolina, Margaret Gibbs, age twelve, Florence Gibbs, age eleven and Lenn Gibbs age nine. Mr. Gibbs also left one brother, Mr. Seth Gibbs, Beaufort, North Carolina, and one sister, Mrs. F. M. Simmons of Washington, D. C.  His sudden death was indeed a great shock to his family and many friends for it was not generally understood that his illness was serious.  He first began the practice of law in Craven County about thirty (30) years ago. From Craven he came to Pamlico about twenty-five (25) years ago. After several years successful law practice, he became interested in the Public Schools of Pamlico County, and on July 4th, 1904, he was elected to fill the unexpired term of P. J. Daniels, deceased, a member of the Pamlico County Board of Education. He continued to serve as a faithful and diligent member of this Board, rendering great service to the schools of the County, until December 9th, 1909 at which time he was elected County Superintendent of the schools of Pamlico County, which position he held until January 6th, 1913, at which time he resigned as County Superintendent to represent Pamlico County in the Legislature of 1913. At this session of the Legislature, the State created the North Carolina Fisheries Commission and Mr. Gibbs was appointed by Governor Craig as State Fish Commissioner which position he was still holding at the time of his death.  Mr. Gibbs is a distinct loss to his County and State, Our hearts mourn in sympathy for his bereaved family whose loss will be so keenly felt, for the dear little boys and girls which he left behind only about a year prior to the death of their father also lost their mother. “Death separates, but it also unites. It unites whom it separates.”  (Proceedings of the Twenty-first Annual Session of the North Carolina Bar Association – August 1919)
